Theatre  Department was established in 1992 by Vazkresia Viharova. The department is member of IETM, EAST, ELIA and continues to extend its international activity.

The department’s activity includes a wide range of projects, seminars and performances in the sphere of theatre, directing and the related fine and applied arts. The department’s activity is related to production and distribution of theatre products. In December 1999, “Slug Theatre” was established as a separate structural unit at New Bulgarian University.
Some of the departments own productions are:

“Customs” of Ivan Hadjiiski, “Alpine lights” of P. Turini, “Three sisters” of A. P. Chehov, “Call me Sofia” – dance performance, “Indje” of Y. Yovkov, “A man’s a man” – B. Brecht., “In the moonlit room” of Valery Petrov, “Old times” of H. Pinter, “Petya, Sonya and Lidia”- dance performance, “A Dolls House” of H. Pinter /H. Ibsen/, "Enamored Sganarelle” of Molier, "Score", an author’s performance of Rumen Tsonev, etc.
The major projects of the department are:
  • Summer Children’s Academy and Theatre Classroom under program “Partnership” – Center for Alternative Education and the program, representing the international organizations UNESCO, UNIDO and UNICEF;
  • “The Bridge”
  • Three-year international theatre project “Tracing roads across”- creative exchange and artistic “know how”. The project presents the over-all activity of Workcenter of Jerzy Grotovski and Thomas Richards in Pontedera Italy.
  • Participation of Scenography students and teachers at the International festival “Process - space” in Balchik and at the Francophone festival “Jean Louis Barrault”.
In the academic year 2000/2001, the department joined the international program ERASMUS/SOCRATES, which provides an opportunity to a considerable number of students for annual specializations at the most prestigious European universities in the sphere of theatre, performing arts, stage design and modern dance.

The programs, developed by the department, are the bachelor program "Theatre" with modules "Psychological Theatre", "Modern and Alternative Theatre Forms", "Dance Theatre", "Musical Theatre"; the master programs: "Artistic Psycho-Social Techniques", "Directing within European Context".
