Mediterranean and Eastern Studies Department was established in 1995 and covers the studies in the field of Ancient and Oriental Sciences. In terms of territorial coverage, the research area spreads over the ancient Mediterranean civilizations – Greece and Rome, the Classic Ancient East – Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, as well as Ancient India, Persia and the Near and Central Asia.

The teaching staff of the department participates in joint scientific programs with lots of foreign universities and research institutes: Institute of Egyptology, Salzburg; University of Haifa, Israel (Prof. Avner Raban – Dean of the Faculty of Underwater Archeology); Belgrade University, Faculty of Philosophy; University of Saint-Petersburg, Faculty of Oriental Studies; Moscow State University, Department of Ancient World History; Center of Scientific Research (ÊÅÐÀ) – Athens, Greece; University of Hamburg; University of London; Oxford University, England.

The permanent seminar of the department is on the topic “Word and Image”, and the seminar lectures are published in the collection of the same name.

The year-book of the department is issued periodically. The department also publishes an English language journal – The Journal of Egyptological Studies, vol. 1 (2004).

Major project of the department is “Word and Image” – a lexicon of the Ancient Egyptian spirituality, initiated in 2003.

The programs, provided by department “Mediterranean and Eastern Studies” are the bachelor program “Foreign Languages and Cultures” – modules “Egyptology with English Language”, “Classical Studies” (Latin, ancient Greek), “Oriental Studies” (Arab language, Persian language, Turkish and Osman-Turkish language); master program “Ancient Egypt in the Classic Age”; the doctoral programs “Ancient Religion and Culture of the Mediterranean” and “Egyptology”.
