Mass Communications Department is one of the first established at NBU. Since 11th March 1991, when the experimental semester at NBU was opened, the “Mass Communications" department has introduced the educational qualification program "Public Relations". The other programs, developed by the department are "Mass Communication Media Producing" and "Personified Audiovisual Journalism". In the academic year 1997/1998 it initiated the master program "Mass Communications Management", and two years later the new Master Program "Public Relations Management" and the Doctoral Program "Mass Communications".
Since 1999 department “Mass Communications” organizes and carries out annual Summer Schools of Public Relations, and since 2003 – media conferences as well.
Traditionally it publishes a Collection of the Summer School of Public Relations, which takes place each year in the end of July.

In 1996 department “Mass Communications" started the regular publishing of the Year-book of the department, where are published the research studies of teachers and post-graduate students, projects and term papers of students, translated materials and presentations of graduated specialists, bachelors, masters and doctors.
Since academic year 2004/2005 the department has been participating in the program structure of the New Bulgarian University with the Bachelor Program “Mass Communications” (with two specializations – Personified Audiovisual Journalism and Public Relations), the Master Program “Mass Communications Management and Public Relations” and the Doctoral Program “Mass Communications”.

The department has published the books "The producer and the challenges of the new audiovisual environment", "Images behind words", "P.S. of the radio, which...", "Television producer", "Live with the others" (Socio-psychological issues), "Crisis Management", "Media Reception", "Media Law Studies", "Unrealized power", "The challenge of audiovisual technologies", "Author’s cinema", "Profession producer", “Journalistic ethics”, “Is television open?”, “Communication strategies”, “Face to face with the media”, etc.

Since the academic 2004/2005 there are held the meetings of the permanent seminar of the department on the topic: “Knowledge of Public Relations practitioners and journalist”.
