STUDYING AT NBU

  • Diplomas Awarded

Studying at NBU has various forms:

    • as a complete education cycle leading to a Bachelor’s degree
    • as a complete education cycle leading to a Master’s degree
    • as a complete education cycle leading to a Doctor of NBU degree
    • as a continuation of education after college or partial education in another higher education institution to complete requirements for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
    • Distance Learning education for Professional Certificate/ Diploma in Management
    • attendance of separate courses
  • Comprehensive University

Study at NBU is organized in Schools. These are structured in accordance with the levels and degrees they provide. NBU has three Schools - School of Basic Education, Undergraduate School and Graduate School. They organize training in programs and courses, put together teams of lecturers and instructors, and are responsible for maintaining the quality of the programs of study.

The language of instruction at NBU is Bulgarian. All students that don’t speak Bulgarian will have a preparatory year studying the language. Bulgarian language is incorporated in the Bachelor degree programs and is included in the fee.
Students that apply in the Master degree programs will have one preparatory year in the program “Bulgarian Language and Culture” (the fee is € 1500).

Bachelor Programs

Training at NBU towards a Bachelor degree starts with a general university training in the first year to ensure a broad academic basis and an interdisciplinary attitude. The emphasis is on the languages and computer literacy. Students are given the opportunity to develop their effectiveness and assess their potential, allowing them to make educated choices about their future development by exploring their own abilities and interests. The second year provides general and fundamental training for prospectives specialists from groups of related professions as well as extends their interdisciplinary training. This saveguards students against becoming narrow specialists who could not communicate with professionals from other fields and who might encounter difficulties with changes in the job market. The third and the forth years offer more specialized interdisciplinary academic education, giving students the opportunity to work successfully in various social and professional fields.
The duration of the study plan is 4 years (8 semesters). To complete this level students must accumulate 240 credits.  After successful thesis defence (10 additional credits) they are awarded a Bachelor Diploma.

Master’s Programs are run at Graduate School. They are intended to provide profound specialization and top-level qualification in a specific professional field. They offer holders of Bachelor degree an opportunity to continue their education in the same – or other – subject. Master’s programs could be research and/or practice oriented.
The duration of the study plan could be 1,5 years or 2 years. To complete this level students must accumulate at least 90 credits (after obtaining a Bachelor degree). After successful thesis defence they are awarded a Master Diploma.

Doctoral Programs offered by the Graduate School (with an average duration of three years) are organized on the basis of an individual syllabus. The doctoral degree (Ph.D.) is designed to prepare students for creative activity, original research, and managerial positions, often in association with university teaching. To complete a Doctoral program, you need to collect 180 credits (after a Master degree) and defend a Doctoral dissertation. Following a successful completion of a doctoral program you will be awarded a degree of Doctor of NBU.

NBU provides Distance Learning of management in non-degree programs at its School of Management. It is the exclusive representative of the European leader in distance learning – The Open University (UK) for Bulgaria. The programs and qualifications offered by the school address the needs of practicing managers - people (with or without a traditional academic education) who are already on the job, but need to acquire concrete practical knowledge of the dynamics of management theory and practice. Technologies of Education are mainly two: Supported Distance Learning (SDL), following the model, used by the Open University, and Self-Directed Development (SDD), based on approach, used by The Institute of Management (UK).

  • Flexible and Dynamic – Credit System and Mobility

When you get to NBU, you will find that you have a great deal of freedom to plan your academic life. Without underscoring the importance of formal teaching and supervision, we place more emphasis on your own approach to learning and private study.
Naturally, each course has a timetable of classes, but you will find that you are responsible for organizing your own program of work and study and ensuring you meet the academic requirements of your courses.
Workload of students at NBU is measured in credits. One of the obligatory requirements for a successful completion of the program of study is the collection of a required number of credits. At NBU one credit corresponds to a workload of 10 academic hours.
The NBU credit system is in compliance with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which greatly enhances the mobility of our students.
International Students may start their higher education at NBU, to accumulate some credits and transfer to another university. Some may have studied in their home country and would like to complete their studies at NBU. It is possible to obtain credits for their previous studies and to complete the degree in less than the standard duration of the program.

  • Studying Bulgarian

Courses at NBU are conducted in the Bulgarian language apart from several programs listed in the section “Programs taught in foreign languages”. Language and specialized training in the Bulgarian language is certified by an examination organized and conducted at the university. The examination consists of two parts – oral and written. The written exam is an essay on a given topic while at the oral exam students read a text, answer questions and have a discussion with the examiner on the topic of the essay. Upon successful completion of the requirements of the examination students receive a certificate enabling them to continue studies in the program of their choice.
All international students who have no or insufficient knowledge of Bulgarian and want to be enrolled in programs taught in Bulgarian will have one year studying Bulgarian.
The courses organized by the Language Center of NBU are intended to train students in the specific skills of academic Bulgarian, to improve their general proficiency in Bulgarian in everyday situations, to introduce them to cultural and social aspects of life in Bulgaria and to prepare them for a successful completion of the requirements of the examination. The courses for international students are organized in compliance with the requirements of the Ordinance on State Requirements for Admission of Students for Studies at Higher Education Institutions in Bulgaria of May 2000.

If you are applying for programs listed in the section “Programs taught in foreign languages”, you will be able to commence your studies directly in the program. The level of language proficiency for those programs (if the language of instruction is not student’s native language) must be proved with an official document.

LIFESTYLE AT NBU AND IN BULGARIA

  • People and places

Meeting people and making friends is always a concern when you first arrive in a foreign country. Fortunately it can be easily overcome in Bulgaria – you will soon find out about the events taking place in the town and will be able to join clubs and societies. Bulgarians are generally considered to be hospitable and friendly. They usually express genuine interest towards foreign people and are very much inclined to make friends and help. But bear in mind that you have not to be over-credulous because here, as everywhere else, surprises are possible. It is recommended to make your first contacts through your colleagues and among the students.
Sofia is a multireligious town. There are communities representing the major religious faiths with their own center, mosque, church or synagogue. International students will be given information on the existing religious communities.

  • Accommodation

The students will be supported by NBU representative to make their own arrangements and to visit accommodation available in the private sector. It is not hard to find an apartment in Sofia. The costs are between € 250 - € 600 per month (rent for separate lodging) depending on location and type of apartment.

  • Living costs

The cost of living in Bulgaria is not high if you don’t have some special requirements and preferences. Just to give you a hint, we estimate that you will need about € 300 per month to cover all living expenses (without accommodation). Some tentative prices follow:
City transport ticket: € 0.50
Taxi: from € 0.30 to € 0.40 per km
One-month city transport card: € 20
Lunch at NBU cafeterias: € 2 - € 3
Textbooks and study materials: € 15 per month
Theatre ticket: € 6
Cinema ticket: € 5

  • Food and Drink

This is a main concern especially for students who have never lived abroad before. It is possible to find almost any type of food in Bulgaria. There are numerous restaurants with Chinese, Mexican, Indian, Russian, Arabian, and European cuisine. Bulgarian cuisine is also interesting and varied. It is worth tasting and foreigners usually get to it very quickly.
If you prefer to prepare your own food, supermarkets stock a wide range of food products from other European countries as well as Asian or American food and pre-prepared meals. The small local food shops and the Saturday/Sunday markets offer fresh and ecologic food products from the countryside.
Coffee, tea and soft drinks are equally popular in Bulgaria. In pubs and bars many young people often drink beer or wine but orange juice or cola is also quite acceptable. The typical Bulgarian hard drink is grape or plum brandy called “rakia”. Be careful with it and do not underestimate its strength!

  • Health Care

All students coming to BG should have a prepaid health insurance for the period they are going to spend in the country. They are advised to visit private clinics if they need medical treatment in BG.

  • Geography and climate

Bulgaria is situated in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. To the north, the country borders on Romania and the Danube river; to the east, on the Black Sea; to the south, on Turkey and Greece; and to the west, on the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia. The landscape is quite diverse, with lowlands, plains and hills prevailing. The Black Sea coast prides itself with long, wide sandy beaches. The climate is moderately continental with four distinct seasons and lot of sun all year round. The average annual air temperature is 12,5°C, with average January temperatures around O°C, and the summer temperatures rarely exceeding 30°C.

  • Leisure time

Very good places for making new contacts are the disco clubs and clubs with live music. They gather people with similar interests and the party is great.
You could go in for sports or fitness to the sports or fitness clubs at reasonable prices. Vitosha Mountains provides an excellent venue for skiers and tourism fens.

While living abroad most students want to travel around and go sightseeing at weekends and during vacation time. Rail and coach travel is quite well organized in BG for excursions to the country and abroad. The international airport is within 30 min. travel time making it easy to travel in and out of the country.
