International Conference on
Cognitive Economics
New Bulgarian University, Sofia, August 5-8, 2005
Cognitive economics emerged in the last decades
as the study of economic systems based on the cognitive capacities and
processes of the participating social agents, their knowledge, beliefs, desires
and intentions. It has questioned traditional assumptions of economic theories,
such as rationality and equilibrium and became an experimental science rather
than a normative one.
Cognitive economics studies:
1. the processes of individual and
collective decision-making and reasoning, distributed problem solving and
individual and organizational learning;
2. the social interactions between
economic agents and their cooperation, coordination, and competition;
3. the role and emergence of norms and
other institutions, the influence of different norms (in particular market
rules) on individual behavior and collective outcome;
4. the evolution of rules, norms, and
institutions and the processes of self-organization of societies.
Cognitive economics uses different methods of
study borrowed from various disciplines:
The conference will bring together
researchers from various areas for a few days in a relatively small one-track
conference with an emphasis on interactions and discussions. The conference
will contribute to the development of interdisciplinary studies and to the
integration of various approaches and to the establishment of closer relations
and cooperation between the key players in this emerging field.
