Working Memory
Alan Baddeley
University of Bristol
1. Multi-Component Working Memory and the
Phonological Loop
This lecture will consider the need to fractionate
memory, leading to the development of the concept of a multi-component working memory. The
initial Baddeley and Hitch model will be described, followed by an account of
the further
fractionation of the phonological loop component, its link to neuropsychological evidence
and attempts to model it computationally. The lecture will then discuss the functional
significance of the loop considered as a language acquisition device , ending with an account of
new insights
that are emerging as a result of pursuing this hypothesis.
Required
readings:
Is working memory still
working?
Working memory and language:
An overview
2.
The Sketchpad, Episodic Buffer, and the Central Executive
This will consider visuo-spatial working memory, investigating
its potential fractionation into separable visual and spatial components and
their utilization in imagery .The executive control will be briefly covered,
leading to a discussion of the need for a fourth component, the episodic
buffer. The current model of working memory will then be described and some
initial attempts to investigate the buffer described.
