Alexander Nevski cathedral

Set in the foothills of the beautiful Vitosha mountain and surrounded by open land, the city of Sofia is considered to be among the nation’s most attractive sites. The city has maintained its historical flavor (of more than 8 millennia) while establishing an environment that encourages cultural activities, research, and business endeavors. With a population of approximately 1 mln Sofia offers the fascination of an European capital city together with the conveniences, services, and attractions of a major metropolitan area. The city and its citizens have long traditions of hospitality and cultural achievements, and a warm appreciation for the foreign student population. The city offers very good educational, recreational, and cultural opportunities.
Sofia is an old city first established by the Thracians about 4000BC. There are still some ruins from the old Roman time city. The National History Museum keeps some fascinating gold treasures from the Thracians. There is a small church which keeps some frescos on the walls from the 12th century which are made in a realistic Renaissance style a long time before the Renaissance in Europe started. Not very far from Sofia is the beautiful Rila monastery as well as some old towns like Plovdiv (with an old city part and a Roman amphitheatre) and Koprivstitza. You may also want to combine your trip with a rest at the Black See side.
